Description: This workshop will provide an introduction to DDC22 combining presentation with hands-on practice using the new edition of the DDC (Dewey Decimal Classification): Coverage will include:

- Practical exercises using WebDewey
The workshop is intended for existing users of the DDC wishing to update themselves on the changes in the new edition of the classification. Practical sessions will include using the printed schedules as well as WebDewey, the Web version of DDC22, enabling you to evaluate WebDewey as a classification tool.

Conflict Resolution

Introduction to Subject Cataloguing using Library of Congress Subject Headings

Description: Participants will have a rare opportunity to participate in a two-day workshop presented by a Library of Congress approved trainer in the application of LCSH. Lori Robare, Assistant Head of Cataloguing at the University of Oregon, will give a two-day workshop covering both theory and practice of subject cataloguing using Library of Congress Subject Headings. Topics include; subject analysis principles, principles and structures of LCSH, tools for subject analysis and their usage, application of LCSH and evaluation of existing LC headings.

Reference Skills

Description: This one-day event will explore the handling of reference/information desk enquiries from a number of perspectives. Reference resources in a variety of formats will be examined, with particular emphasis on Irish material. Developing effective online search techniques will be one of the key elements of the training day. Key skills required in conducting an effective and successful enquiry interview will also be covered, providing an opportunity to consider the interpersonal aspect of the enquiry interaction.
Audience: This course is aimed at Library Assistants, Senior Library Assistants and professionals moving into reference desk work.

Using Web Technology

Description: This is an introductory course for library staff who want to be more effective in using the Web and finding good quality information. The course will offer an overview of developments in Web technology, different Web browsers, customizing a browser, using search engines, optimal saving of pages and images, printing, zipping files and downloading plugins, eg Adobe Reader. The course will involve a mixture of presentation and practical work. Course notes will be distributed on the day and course documentation along with support files will be posted on a Web site (username and password to be supplied on the day).
Pre-Requisite: Some experience of using a PC and mouse

Writing for the Web

Description: Web content and accessibility are now critical issues for libraries. Writing for the Web demands particular perspectives in writing, composition and style to ensure effective communication with readers. Appropriate writing styles and editing methods will be examined through worked examples. Creativity, consistency, navigation and accessibility will all be examined.
Audience: The course is directed at library staff involved in developing and writing informational and promotional material for an internal or an external readership. Course notes and documentation will be distributed on the day.

The Reality of the Virtual Learning Environment

Description: This two-day workshop will provide an overview of the practical issues surrounding the use of a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and offer some advice, with a view to:
- Suggesting potential areas for the use of the VLE
- Outlining the resource, training and technological implications of using a VLE for delivery
- Identifying good practice in course design and development
- Providing an overview of pedagogical issues relating to the use of VLE.
Following on from day one, the use of WebCT in course delivery in the University of Ulster will be explored. This will pull together various strands focusing as follows:
- the work of the Institute of Lifelong Learning in the delivery of courses
- through Campus One, the University’s virtual campus
- the role of the subject Librarians in supporting online course development and e-learners
- the provision of resources through HERON, TalisList, electronic document delivery and Athens authentication
- issues involved in the development of an induction package and online information skills module
