PROGRAMME:

The programme will begin by providing an overview of the communication initiatives at a strategic and operational level within the Information Services Department of the University of Ulster.

Building Relationships

This will concentrate on building effective working relationships. A continuum of such relationships ranging from University-wide activities through to local arrangements will be explored.
Improving Communication

This will concentrate on improving those key interpersonal skills essential for effective communication. Tutor-mediated exercises and activities will form an integral part of the programme.

9.30 – 11.00 Building Relationships:

· Scene-setting exercise “How many ways do we communicate? – Let us count the ways…”

· Strategic perspective of Library/Information Services/University interactions – or why we do what we do everyday…

· “Communicating with Users” – A Day in the Life of a Customer Support Librarian/Subject-support Librarian

11.00 – 11.15 Coffee

11.15 – 11.45 Developing a student’s charter – the do’s and don’ts

11.45 – 12.30 Sharing the experience – discussion

12.30 – 1.30 Lunch

1.30 – 3.00 Improving communication through:

· listening, questioning, assertiveness skills

· giving and receiving feedback

3.00 – 3.15 Tea

3.15 – 4.00 Developing an action plan & Review
