Description: Over the last eighteen months the University of Ulster Information Services Department has been piloting the use of coaching within its workplace. This one day programme will share the experiences of this initiative and will explore the definition of coaching. It will also look at the benefits for the coachee, the coach and the department and will include an opportunity to try out coaching skills. Finally, we will use the GROW model to consider how coaching could be taken forward in your area.
Audience: Middle managers empowered to take this forward in their own area.

Presentation Skills for Library Staff

Description: Making a presentation to a group of people can be a daunting task. Library staff are often required to give presentations in a variety of situations and to a variety of different people, be they library users, other work colleagues, management, stakeholders or at meetings. This course is designed to enable participants to make natural, interesting and effective presentations with confidence. Participants will learn how to generate audience commitment and action through effective objective planning and meeting control. Participants
will be given the opportunity to deliver a short pre-prepared presentation to the group in a supporting environment and will benefit from self appraisal.

Introduction to Writing for Academic Publication

Description: This one-day course will focus primarily on writing for journals. Other forms of academic writing such as book reviews, book chapters, books, edited collections and conference papers will also be touched on. Part of the programme will cover getting published. There will be a strong practical element to the course. Participants having the opportunity to write, with people who have published, sharing experiences and tips. At the end of the course each participant will draw up a writing plan for an article/conference paper. An academic writing group may be formed among participants to encourage and further develop our academic writing.

Metadata: principles and practice

Description: This course provides a practical introduction to principles and practice of metadata, using as examples the most widely-used formats. It demystifies the concept of metadata, and shows how and why it is used, in a variety of environments. A variety of commonly-used metadata formats will be demonstrated for example Dublin Core, and AACR/MARC – and the way in which metadata creation relates to the ‘traditional’ library/information tasks of indexing and cataloguing will be outlined.

Lessons in Leadership

Description:This one day programme aims to introduce participants to the importance of leadership in the development of effective organisations. The programme will cover fundamental leadership practices and the application of contemporary and historical ideas relating to leadership in the workplace, along with aspects of human behaviour and the impact of temperament. Prior to the programme, participants will complete the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI-Self) assessment. This inventory allows participants to undertake a self-assessment of their individual workplace behaviours that have relevance to leadership and links to the Fundamental Leadership Practices that will be explored fully during the programme. Individual reports are confidential and will be distributed during the workshop.
