PROGRAMME PROPOSAL

LESSONS IN LEADERSHIP TO BE HOSTED BY GLUCKSMAN LIBRARY UNIVERSITY OF LIMERICK

1 December 2008

ANLTC (Academic and National Library Training Co-operative)

Background

The Academic and National Library Training Co-operative (ALNTC) has identified a need to include a leadership training programme in its suite of membership development events.

This proposal presents an outline syllabus and timetable for a one day training programme entitled “Lessons in Leadership”, together with an optional development extension that enables programme participants to (a) further enhance their potential to advance their leadership development in the period following completion of the training, and (b) transfer the programme learning to the workplace with maximum impact.

Programme Title

Lessons in Leadership

Programme Aims & Objectives

The programme aims to:

- Introduce Participants to the concept Leadership and its importance in the development of effective organisations

- Discuss predominant historical and contemporary ideas relating to leadership and consider their application in participant workplace settings

- Explore aspects of human behaviour that enable the exercise of leadership to contribute motivational impact

- Consider the impact of individual temperament on the context and exercise of leadership

- Introduce Values Based Leadership concepts

- Present and analyse the Fundamental Leadership Practices

- Provide participants with individual feedback generated by the Leadership Practices Inventory process

Programme Format

Phase 1 – Pre Programme Leadership Practices Assessment

Prior to attendance on the programme, participants will complete the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI-Self) assessment. This inventory allows programme participants to undertake a self-assessment of their individual workplace behaviours that have relevance to leadership and links to the Fundamental Leadership Practices that will be explored fully during the programme.

The assessment generates an LPI Feedback Report, which presents numerical and graphical illustrations of where each participant considers they score in terms of the Fundamental Leadership Practices. Individual reports are distributed to participants during the training workshop.

Following completion of the training workshop, delegates who have attended the Lessons in Leadership programme are offered the option of undertaking an individualised 360o Leadership Practices Assessment.

The 360o assessment process involves completion of a Leadership Practices Inventory (similar to that completed by participants in Phase 1) by a group of individuals who are in a position to observe the participant’s leadership behaviour (Observers). This group of Observers can include the participant’s manager, direct reports, co-workers, and others such as key clients or suppliers. The LPI (Observer) is sent to up to 12 observers nominated by the course participants and processed by Greater Heights Ltd in a confidential manner that fully protects their individual identities.

On completion of the associated computer-based processing, a full LPI 360o Feedback Report is provided to the programme participant, together with a detailed Workbook that facilitates further development of individual skills for the future.

NOTE: Costs associated with the Phase 3 option will be provided to participants

during the Lessons in Leadership workshop
