Open Questions

  1. Which part of the course did you find most useful?

         Authority Headings

All of it -Little time devoted in my institution to this so the course was extremely useful

         Entire course highly useful

         Becoming aware of subject cataloguing

         Chronological & geographic subject headings

         Geographic subject headings

         Practical sessions

Practical sessions that gave an opportunity to apply the principles and concepts covered

         Doing the exercises

         Exercises applying skills

Handouts excellent – good references for the future

         Manual

Manual and how to use it

Presenter was generous with her time

Clarity of presentation – good manual

         *Overview

         Systematic bringing together of information

All parts relevant – all parts integrate with each other

Application of LCSH – Assigning and constructing subject headings

Main section of the course was very interesting

         Good overview

Session on MARC cataloguing was particularly helpful

Well set out to form training for staff (manual?)

         Practical sessions

2.   *Which part of the course did you find least useful?

         SACO proposals

         Music cataloguing

Detailed examination of authority records coding

I needed to brush up on the whole area so I found all of it useful

         Subdivision authority records (188 field)

         Modules 14 & 15

Examples were not as useful as they could have been – European examples more relevant

Handout both most useful and least useful.  It is not designed for ease of use.  Should be redesigned, great to have a handout but a folder of slides is not the best way to go

Many did not complete this section or put N/A

3.         Have you any other suggestions for improvements to the course?

         Venue cold on the day

         Venue stuffy on the day

US & UK MARC tags are different.  A mapping of these differences would be useful though MARC21 will render this largely unnecessary

Feel UCD Library course does not spend a lot of time in this area, but a basic introduction to MARC  cataloguing might be useful

Better notes on 008 fixed field

Separate sheets listing fields relevant to the exercises

More localised examples (European & Irish)

More practical examples especially more explanation of pattern headings

A lot to pack into two days.  Would like to learn how to use LCSH online (navigation)

Slower pace, perhaps over 3 days

More time for exercises. Smaller group to facilitate individual communication

A section on how to use online resources for LCSH

         More emphasis on local

4.   What other activities would you like ANLTC to offer?

         Official Publications

         Government Reference

         Time/Project management

         MARC 21 Training – Advanced

Further training in other aspects of cataloguing

Further training in cataloguing with particular emphasis on Irish situation and also use of aids/tool for cataloguing

LCSH again, with particular emphasis on Irish context

         Advanced course in LCSH

Course utilising PC Lab facilities to facilitate use of online tools in practical sessions

         DDC

         Non-book materials (Cataloguing?)

         Information environment

Plenty of practical courses like this

Frequent updates on LCSH practice / MARC21 etc.

         Advanced cataloguing /subject

More practical workshops e.g. AACRII, MARC21, in depth LCSH

         Very basic introduction to cataloguing

         Cataloguing principles; classification principles

More of this type of course

5.         Any other comments or suggestions?

         Manual too bulky

Great manual notes with the course with enough detail to make sense of later on

Excellent workshop, wish I had such training prior to use of LCSH. It was the first formalised training I had received in LCSH

This course was well presented and easy to listen to and follow

         Very good course

Possibly less dense – More examples/Hands on

Lori was excellent at her job – Thank you

A tough but valuable two days work
